Often deceivingly referred to in the trade as "Australian Jade," chrysoprase is a term for green agate. While the majority of material comes from Queensland, Australia, commercially producing deposits are also located in Indonesia, Tanzania, Germany, Brazil, Arizona, and California. Chrysoprase is green with shades ranging from white-green to dark green. Highly translucent apple green stones are most desirable.
Because Chrysoprase is agate (a member of the quartz family), it is both durable and hard, ranking 6 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Light to moderate wear will eventually be noticed over time if worn roughly every day. It is safe to use chemical jewelry cleaners with chrysoprase jewelry, but it is advised to follow the instructions on the cleaner used. High grade material is commonly cut en cabochon and used in rings, pendants, earrings, and decorative pieces.
