About Alexandrite:
"Emerald by day, ruby by night" is a phrase often associated with alexandrite. Alexandrite is an exceptionally rare variety of color changing chrysoberyl found in Russia, Brazil, and Sri Lanka. Ideal specimens appear bright green in natural sunlight and red in orange incandescent light (traditionally candlelight). Most commercial stones display varying degrees of this color shift, often changing from greenish to purplish. Stones over one carat are highly unusual as most gem quality alexandrite crystals are small. Reasonably priced stones available to the market over one carat are typically lab created synthetics, even in older vintage pieces. Visible inclusions and surface characteristics are to be expected in many natural alexandrite stones.
Alexandrite is very hard, ranking a durable 8.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. This makes alexandrite jewelry suitable for all occasions, including rings intended for everyday wear. Jewelry made with alexandrite can safely be cleaned with chemical jewelry cleaner, though we suggest to avoid putting natural pieces in an ultrasonic cleaner as some stones can be brittle.
