Many amethysts from Brazil can turn into yellow citrine when heated at 850 degrees Fahrenheit.

Because amethyst is quartz, the material is durable and ranks 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Amethyst makes great rings and is easy to clean with soap and water at home.  Chemical jewelry cleaners are safe to use on amethyst jewelry.
